Coincidentally, I was watching September Wheat yesterday and noticed several gaps on CBOT's daily 5-minute charts, but plenty of activity on the electronic 5-minute charts. I asked my broker about this and confirmed that floor trading is not much there anymore. I told the broker that I didn't like to see that, thinking that electronic trading is likely to open up more opportunities for manipulation. Also, I've recently traded a couple of option spreads, one in corn and the other in live cattle. Not easy to do, since the markets were small and I had to guess about the bid/ask price changes during underlying price changes. It wasn't uncommon for one side of my spreads to not trade at all during a day's market hours, even when the option was "in the market". These were floor trades, as my broker tried a couple of trades electronically, without success. I'm wondering why there just doesn't seem to be much interest in commodity options anymore. Is it because of access to mini contracts (all electronic now, I think)? Is it because of increased interest in fractional electronic trading? Whatever, I'm sorry to be witnessing the decline, perhaps the demise, of floor trading.
